Amy Stone

"Hah!" I crowed. I had won Connect Four yet again against my itouch. I always seemed to win. My dad grinned at me from the rearview mirror. "Will ya give that game a break?" he asked. "Play something else for a while that you can actually loose on." I smiled and picked up my book. "Have it your way," I told him. Suddenly the car swerved. We both jerked in our seats. "If there were any other people on this road we would've been in a heap of trouble," my dad muttered. He was right, the road was strangely deserted. He asked me if I was okay, then kept muttering about how the car was against him. Then the car swerved again, and even though my dad kept stomping on the brakes, the car wouldn't stop. Finally he got the car under control again. "If your mother were here she'd know exactly what to do," he told me. This was one of the few times he had ever mentioned my mom. It was a touchy subject. She had left a while ago, and never came back. As we kept driving, we thought the worst was over. But it wasn't. The car flipped over, and screeched down the road, rolling over and over. Someone screamed. I think it was me. I only saw a blur. Finaly the car came to a stop, and all was silent. I was crushed between the roof and the side door. I pushed on the handle, and yanked open the door, even though it hurt. I tumbled out, a heap of blood, sweat, and fright. What had happened? It was so all of a sudden. With a jolt I remembered my father. But before I could run around the the other side of the upside down car, a gentle hand on my shoulder stopped me. I gasped, but something about this girls warm, hazel eyes stopped me. She looked the same age as me, her long blonde hair swirled around her face in the wind as she smiled. It was a sad smile. "He's gone, Amy, there's nothing you can do." I didn't ask any questions, even though they were all racing through my head. How did she know me? Who was she? How did she get here? I turned and saw my dad, eyes wide in fright, and a trickle of blood down his head. I sat down, dazed, and cried. The girl kneeled down beside me and hugged me, which seemed to give me strength, and courage. She said her name was April. I told her, "My dad had been taking me to a place. He said it was something our mother had told him to do. He never told me where it was or how to get there. What will I do?" "I know of that place," April said. "I will take you there. But we must hurry. Come with me." She stood, and held out her hand. I took it, cast one last look back at the car wreck and my father, and let her lead me away. I hoped she would take me to a good place... and home.
